What Makes a Good Communicator?
Communication exchanges are at the heart of all relationships, business and personal. How these exchanges are managed directly affects an individual’s success as well as a company’s performance.
People listen to what they want to hear and how they want to hear it. Since we all travel down the communication highway, we'd better be prepared for two-way traffic. The TALK TO ME© communication system provides a road map based on Dr. O’Grady’s ground-breaking theory that there are two types of communicators: Empathizers and Instigators. Empathizers and Instigators believe, think, and speak differently about communication exchanges. The problem: People do not realize and understand these differences, so they continue to struggle with the basic act of communication. TALK TO ME© provides the framework from which people can identify and understand their communicator types, as well as those of others, so they can be successful in any communication situation.
The TALK TO ME© communication system was designed to help people succeed in the world of commerce and in their personal relationships. It helps provide a new understanding as people drive down the two-way communicator highway.
A good communicator:
- Knows his/her talk partner's communicator type.
- Is able to recite the four communicator modes: Emotions, Beliefs, Behaviors, and Talks.
- Is able to “hear” the modes talk and is able to respond instead of react.
- Appreciates that E-types prefer to travel in the lanes of Emotions and Talks, and responds appropriately.
- Appreciates that I-types prefer to travel in the lanes of Beliefs and Behaviors, and responds appropriately.
- As an E-type, uses the positive Beliefs mode more, to start change fast and try out new talk tools that last.
- As an I-type, uses the positive Emotions mode more, to start change fast and try out new talk tools that last.
- Doesn't play the blame game by using gender, mood, ethnic/racial, emotional baggage, habit, personality, inability to change, or other excuses to explain away lame talking tactics.
If you're a good communicator who wants to become a great communicator, applying this communication system can make all the difference in the world.
TALK TO ME© EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION Training Goals
TALK TO ME© provides the understanding and insights needed to move beyond assumptions. Participants will learn how to read the unique maps of the two communicator styles in order to make communication easier and more fun on the highway of life. This will be achieved through attainment of the following training goals.
Participants will:
- Learn to think about this training experience in the same way that they learned to drive a car, and that there are two types of drivers on the road: Empathizers and Instigators.
- Take and score the New Insights Communication Inventory (NICI) to determine their communicator type: Empathizer or Instigator.
- Open the lines of communication by realizing that both types of drivers' steering wheels are on the opposite sides of the car. Thus, shouting about what is the right way or the wrong way to get somewhere fastest will become unnecessary.
- Be able to read the roadmap or preferred modes of travel habitually taken by one's own communicator type and by the opposing communicator type.
- Enjoy driving on the two-way communicator highway freely by using on-ramps, off-ramps, road signs, and observing speed limits, to avoid detours and talk wrecks.
- Stop playing the same old song on your “worry or anger radio station” – WARS-FM – and instead use positive talk tools to improve your energy and stamina.
- Begin to be able to identify with whom they are talking by communicator type and how to adjust their communication accordingly to get where they want to go.
- Be encouraged to incorporate these principles into their daily work and home life to achieve desired results.
Unclear communication fosters hard feelings and conflict, while clear communication energizes and empowers as the problem-solving process is simplified. Are you ready to take the steps to get rid of confusing communication habits?
"There are neither good nor bad communicators. Rather, there are either effective or ineffective communicators on the two-way communicator highway... those who do or do not get positive results when they speak to themselves or to others."
