Being a Responsive Leader

Have you ever felt like you were stuck on a big speed bump of life and worried that you were going to stay there? Many leaders feel that way when strong wills clash and big ideas crash around the communicator table at work. Too many titans trying to drive the communicator car at the same time can create frustration and a stagnation of creative problem-solving. For better or worse, pressure and change are your middle names. The biggest threat to your company is the strangulation hold of mediocre to poor communication. As a leader, you understand that you alone are responsible for driving the company communicator car expertly. Getting too comfortable with your communication style will make you nap like the hare in the parable of the Hare and the Tortoise, and you will lose the race.

The buck stops with you - are you being a responsive or a reactive leader?

Impatience, panic attacks or anger episodes are costly since they make your team inefficient and accident prone. Sensitive or negative feedback must be delivered in a way that empowers employees so that changes can be made and everyone benefits. Some team members may feel frustrated but are afraid to speak up for fear of reprisal...and everyone loses out. How people communicate depends on a combination of their communicator and personality types. The LEADERSHIP TALKS program has the answers to these "people puzzles."

If you feel that you don’t have the time for positive communication coaching and consulting…the reality is, you don’t have time not to! Negative communicators constantly crash and burn, never getting where they want to go, never getting what they need from others, much less giving anything positive back to this wonderful world of ours. You must learn to do what will reduce anxiety and guide your team through the talk traffic jams to the open communicator freeway. What makes a good leader?

A good leader is first and foremost a man or woman who is the leader of his or her own life, one who is continuously getting better in ways that create large rewards…an open person who is curious, growing, and changing – and likes to get to know others. A good leader is both a wise professor and novice learner who is unafraid to be in either the student or teacher role, who is willing to constantly walk the team out of the box in which they find themselves. A good leader is results-driven - "What you see is what you get!" is his or her motto. A good leader is results-analytical - "Let’s stop doing what isn’t working to do something different that might work!" A good leader is an expert problem-solver, who enjoys solving business and people puzzles. A good leader is able to select and motivate those who will benefit the team, able to fuse together multiple diverse visions and agendas with the torch of a single-minded mission. A good leader empowers his/her employees to provide the “value-added" components which propel the business to successful goal completion.

"Survey results indicated that... 'continual self-improvement' leads the pack of what makes and keeps a positive leader effective... ethical... centered... ever-focused on change and problem-solving. I was happy to learn that a positive leader seeks to better her/his best performance without being a perfectionist!"
